Not Ed Boon, But 1 Other Mortal Kombat Developer Stopped Scorpion Being a Wonder Woman Ripoff

From the original Mortal Kombat to Mortal Kombat 1, “GET OVER HERE” has become an iconic catchphrase among them. Basically, everything that Scorpion does has found a home in the hearts of people. One of his signature moves, when he harpoons the opponents through his Kunai rope dart, can raise the hair strands on anyone’s neck every time they hear it.

Little do they know, this could’ve become a matter of jokes today if the original concept had been added to the game. To that end, Scorpion might’ve become the cowboy running around, giving a loud “YEEHAW” instead of the original catchphrase. Maybe people would’ve given him a new alias, ‘Wonder Man’.

Mortal Kombat Would’ve Seen an Entirely Different Character

The character was originally created by Ed Boon and John Tobias and initially played by martial artist Daniel Pesina. But the origin story is as intriguing as the character is to players today. The idea was to give the fierce warrior a lasso that would grab the victim’s head to pull them towards him.

In one interview with MEL Magzine, Pesina shared his experience with his involvement in Scorpion’s development. Interestingly, someone slipped him the lasso idea, which, thankfully, he didn’t showcase interest in pulling off. He said that,

One of the guys came up with the idea to take a lasso and twist it over my head, throw it and then pull somebody over. I was just like, “No, I’m not going to do the Wonder Woman thing.”

Although the rope dart has been a staple of the character since its origins, he has a hold on other weapons, including katanas and an axe. However, the depiction of these weapons is mostly showcased during the cinematic cuts of the video game.

A Lasso Won’t Really Go Well With The Scorpion Outfit

For most of the game’s fans, Scorpion is without doubt among their favorite characters. Talking about crossovers, the character remains the top choice for even Mortal Kombat‘s creator Ed Boon. Even for the upcoming collaborations in a recently released game, MultiVersus suggested the name of the former Shirai Ryu warrior alongside Sub-Zero and Liu Kang.

Though it’s good we never got to see the lasso thing in Mortal Kombat, the character may not be as popular as he has become over time. Moreover, a lasso wouldn’t go well with his personality. Now as the story has entered a new era where Liu Kang has taken control over the creation, maybe he’ll add up some twist.

Scorpion’s origins have already been altered in the new timeline where he is no longer a part of the Shirai Ryu clan but Lin Kuei. The next game is likely to arrive in 2027, which gives ample time for fans to wonder what will be in store for the character.
