NZ PM congratulates Trump on ‘historic’ election win

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says he has spoken with US President-elect Donald Trump and congratulated him on his “historic election victory”.

“New Zealand and the United States have a strong and enduring partnership … we agreed on the importance of deepening ties between our two nations and I look forward to doing just that,” Luxon said in a post on X on Tuesday.

Luxon is heading to the APEC summit in Peru on Thursday where he will meet outgoing US President Joe Biden.

Trump campaigned on introducing tariffs of up to 20 per cent on imported goods as part of his “America First” economic policy.

Luxon has previously warned against jumping to conclusions about Trump policies that might affect New Zealand.

Trump will be inaugurated and enter the White House on January 20.
