Of All Things, God of War Should Follow in the Footsteps of Prime Video’s The Boys, and It Makes Perfect Sense
God of War is one of the strongest first-party franchises under the PlayStation Studios banner and the gaming community is eager to see more exciting content soon. The Norse Saga was a perfect bookend for the journeys of Kratos and Atreus, however, there is still potential to dive back in and explore more stories.
The franchise has been around for the past few years and featured countless characters from different pantheons. The developers introduced deities of Norse mythology after Kratos destroyed the Gods of his homeland and this could open more doors for opportunities to expand the lore beyond Kratos.
The God of War Franchise Could Take Notes From One Popular Amazon Prime Video Series
Santa Monica Studio has struck gold with this franchise and spent years exclusively working on building the franchise to where it is today. The Norse Saga may have concluded after the events of Ragnarok and peace can now reign across the Nine Realms that it is free from the rule of the Aesir Gods, however, there is a possibility of another God of War game that can be used as an epilogue.
Franchises often rely on major projects but there is always room for smaller projects in between. Perhaps a smaller game similar to Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy as extensions to their respective franchises before the next major game.
I think the future of the franchise lies in spin-offs.

Amazon Prime Video hosted a panel for the live-action adaptation of The Boys and shared several spinoff projects that are in active development including a prequel series starring Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy. These smaller projects will hold the fans off until the final season comes in the next few years and this is a useful strategy to keep the franchise relevant and avoid being forgotten.
The Norse Saga introduced plenty of characters that could lead their spinoff projects without Kratos being the focus. Fans speculated that Atreus would star in a smaller project venturing outside the Nine Realms after the developers retire Kratos for good after the events of God of War Ragnarok and expand the lore.
The Boys Could Serve as the Foundation for an Expanded God of War Franchise
Players gained plenty more questions than answers before the credits started rolling in Ragnarok and would not mind more content set within the Nine Realms. The God of Thunder has a knack for theatrics and drama that could be fleshed out in a spinoff game about Thor’s early days.
The franchise could survive without Kratos, however, it will not be an easy task to provide the gaming community with another lead after everything the Ghost of Sparta has gone through. Other characters that could rival his might like Tyr reminiscing his travels as the previous God of War or a project focused on Faye leading to her battle with Thor on Vanaheim.
The problem with a large franchise is that not every character gets their fair share of the spotlight and rather than squeezing them into the story, they deserve one for themselves.
Santa Monica Studio could use these projects to hold the fans until the next major saga. This is a viable strategy to expand the franchise.
