Officials hope to continue northern New Mexico balloon event annually

RIO ARRIBA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – The Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area celebrated a first-of-its-kind experience this weekend.

Dozens of hot air balloons filled the skies for the first-ever Rio Grande Sky Fiesta.

The historic, 148-acre Los Luceros Ranch, located just north of Española, hosted the event.

The two-day ballooning fun celebrated the rich culture and breathtaking views of northern New Mexico, bringing an event to an area where balloons in the skies aren’t normally seen.

Both days of the event featured a mass ascension, and Saturday evening had a balloon glow. Officials said they are hoping to make this a yearly tradition.
