White Sands is not just a random name. It’s an actual location in New Mexico, famous for its vast white sand dunes and home to a National Park. Intriguingly, it’s also where Black Mesa, the fictional research facility in the Half Life series, is located.
This connection has led many to speculate that “White Sands” could be a code name for the highly anticipated sequel to Half Life 2.
White Sands is a place in New Mexico, where HL1 takes place. It could also mean snow, and HL3 was meant to take place in the Arctic. Hmmm. pic.twitter.com/Zug3n62RwD

Chandel’s resume isn’t the only piece of evidence fans are clinging to. The rumor first gained traction on Reddit’s r/GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit, where some gamers noticed the mysterious project listing and went to town on it.
Chandel’s impressive portfolio includes notable titles like Starfield and Call of Duty: Vanguard as well, lending even more credibility to the possibility that she might be involved in something as significant as a new Half Life game, and that this isn’t a typo or a misunderstanding.
Valve’s secrecy about its projects often fuels these rumors. The company’s focus on quality over quantity means they take their time with game development, leading to some very long periods of silence. This approach, while frustrating for fans, has resulted in some of the most beloved games in history, and has kept them from falling off.
Deadlock and the Legacy of Half Life
As speculation about Half Life 3 grows, it’s worth noting that Valve is working on another new game called Deadlock. Described as a third-person shooter with heroes and abilities, the game reportedly has features similar to Dota 2, but also inspired by Overwatch.
Despite some players already experiencing the game via beta testing, Valve has yet to officially acknowledge its existence, adding to the mystery surrounding their projects.
The franchise, launched in 1998, revolutionized the first-person shooter genre with its storytelling and gameplay mechanics which were far ahead of its time. Its sequel, Half Life 2, released in 2004, further solidified the series’ legendary status as a massive innovator of the genre, probably the biggest after Doom.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting a third installment for nearly two decades. Half Life: Alyx, a VR game released in 2020, helped with some of that excitement but wasn’t the full sequel many had hoped for.
Over the years, various leaks, rumors, and teases have kept the Half Life 3 hope alive. From cryptic statements by Valve employees to hidden references in other games, the community has been piecing together any clues they can find.
The company is also notorious for not making a third game for some of its biggest and most beloved series, such as Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress, and Portal. Are you hoping that the game finally gets officially confirmed? Let us know in the comments.
