Paris Olympics 2024: Australian athletes make journey home after successful Games

Our Aussie Olympic champions are flying home after the country’s most successful Games.

There were 18 Gold Medals obtained in Paris and a string of social media posts from athletes aboard a Qantas charter flight leaving Paris show the winning buzz is not over yet.

Proudly wearing their newly acquired medals, several Olympians shared a collection of happy snaps on Instagram as they made their big journey back home on Tuesday.

Gold medallist swimmers Kaylee McKeown and Ariarne Titmus joined for a selfie after their efforts in the pool united a nation.

“So proud of us,” Titmus said in the post.

Kayaker Riley Fitzsimmons, while wearing a silver medal aboard the Olympic flight, said “we’re settling in alright — time to come home” while posing alongside sprint canoeist Jean Van der Westhuyzen.

Athletes on the Qantas flight were greeted with a pillow that read “Welcome Home Team Australia” and a collection of green and gold goodies.

Diver Mellisa Wu said the first flight — Paris to Perth — would take 16 hours before she flew back to Sydney.

WA athletes delivered almost a quarter of Australia’s gold medals at the Games, including Nina Kennedy’s pole vaulting victory, Matt Wearn’s dinghy sailing first place and Matt Ebden’s tennis doubles win.

Wearn and Kaylee McKeown carried the flag into the closing ceremony while gold medallist canoeist Jess Fox was recognised at the Games’ closure after being voted onto the IOC Athletes Commission.

Retiring legend Emma McKeon also took centre stage as a representative of Oceania as part of the closing ceremony.
