Paris Olympics 2024: Peter Bol’s campaign over after finishing fourth in repechage
Peter Bol’s Olympic campaign has come to an end after a fourth-placed finish in his 800m repechage heat.
Needing a top-two finish in order to progress through to the final, Bol could only finish fourth in a time of 1min46.12sec, behind Botswana’s Kethobogile Haingura, Algeria’s Slimane Moula and local Corentin le Clezio.
Starting second from the outside in lane eight, Bol got out of the blocks well, settling in second behind Haingura.
He started the final lap by attempting to press up on the Botswanan but was repelled before dropping further back in the pack, at least managing to edge out Uganda’s Tom Dradiga on the line.
The elimination represents a disappointing Olympics for the WA hopeful, who was among Australia’s best stories from the Tokyo Games with a fourth-placed finish in the same event.
His preparations for Paris were heavily interrupted with a provisional doping ban which was overturned when a second sample proved inconclusive.
