Peter Molyneux Just Insulted Mobile Gaming During Gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live While Showing Masters of Albion

For years now, Peter Molyneux has remained in the shadows and away from much of the spotlight after a tainted legacy and a few too many lies left him as nothing more than a small joke across different retrospectives on gaming’s last decade.

However, at Gamescom 2024, he finally made his comeback with Masters of Albion, and the first thing he did was insult and shame the very platform that supported him during his time away from console and PC gaming. Indeed, it’s a grind-set that few can comprehend.

For those not in the loop, Peter Molyneux, after his failures starting with Fable, spent the better part of the last decade in the mobile gaming landscape, starting with Curiosity. Now, after not finding much success in that space, the man is back to his roots with his newest god game, Masters of Albion.

Although the game appears to be somewhat rough in shape, with an outdated UI, wonky animations, and LOD issues, it does hold a lot of promise as a unique offering, especially considering how saturated the god-game genre has become in recent years.

What’s both funny and sad, however, is how Molyneux, right after stepping onto the stage of Opening Night Live, begins by regretting his time spent developing mobile games and insulting the platform as a whole, saying:

After messing around on mobile – what the hell was I doing? I thought to myself, I need to come home. I need to come home to PC and console,

Admittedly, it is a little difficult not to feel frustrated by the man’s statement. Considering how much progress all gaming platforms have made together in the last few years, Peter Molyneux’s statement feels like a lesson on how to not understand the industry you’re a part of.

The Mobile Gaming Industry Has Seen Immense Growth in the Last Few Years, and Peter Molyneux Ignored All of It

It’s important to remember that mobile gaming continues to remain the biggest money-maker as a platform within the gaming industry. It’s also still the biggest platform by sheer number of users.

Given just these things, it’s easy to see how off-putting Molyneux’s statement is, especially considering the flak his game has been getting since last year. Put simply, his games may have gone under the radar and faced little success, but that doesn’t equate to the platform being the wrong choice for other developers.

This is without considering the simple fact that the platform is now more than capable of delivering AAA gaming right in the palm of your hands, as seen by Apple’s recent strides and the offerings of developers like Hoyoverse.
