Phantom Blade Zero’s Director Believes Another Game Will Be a 2024 Turning Point for China’s Blossoming Gaming Industry, and It’s Hard to Disagree

Phantom Blade Zero is a new triple-A game from China. Developed by S-Game, the project is an action-RPG that’s dark and super stylistic. The Soulslike gameplay will surely keep players engaged the whole way through.

The founder and CEO of S-Game, ‘Soulframe‘ Liang, discussed the project in a recent interview. Also serving as the game’s director, Liang points to one game releasing in 2024 that could propel Chinese developers to a whole new level. It’s ride or die for this highly anticipated game.

Black Myth: Wukong Could Benefit Chinese Game Development

During the interview, Liang kept going back to Game Science’s project as a key factor in moving the games industry forward in China. He thinks the game will be a big hit and continues:

There are more to come. I think they’ll all be very successful, and I think that’s the trend. It’s definitely the beginning…Even though they were making MMOs and mobile games before, I totally understand how good they are.

The HoYoverse games are also signs of Chinese development receiving international praise and recognition. Genshin Impact is its hottest project, very well known across the world for its free-to-play business model with gacha monetization.

Other games include Honkai: Star Rail and Honkai Impact 3rd, also free-to-play with gacha mechanics.

If Black Myth: Wukong does succeed and becomes a massive success, Liang could be correct. The reputation of Chinese developers could change from MMO/mobile gaming to producing triple-A like projects for consoles and PC.

Phantom Blade Zero appears to be another high quality console and PC game coming from China which is all the more reason for Liang to root for Game Science’s project. If it delivers, that means more players will have eyes on Liang’s game.

When the reveal trailer released in 2020, it was 13 minutes of gameplay which shocked the world. The game seemingly came out of nowhere but running on the Unreal Engine 4 at the time, it made for a fantastic first impression.

The game has since moved up to the Unreal Engine 5, making the world look even more realistic. Taking many Soulslike mechanics, the linear experience will have you travel from world-to-world learning about the Sun Wukong. It’s not a full blown Soulslike adventure but should satisfy anyone looking for a similar experience.

On the other side of the coin, Phantom Blade Zero is very Soulslike in nature with insanely fast combat inside the dark aesthetic. No release date for this game yet but keep an eye on S-Game’s latest project.

Black Myth: Wukong is coming out on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 20. Xbox players will have to wait for a Series X|S port as no official date has been given.
