Philipsburg man hospitalized, seriously injured in crash on highway near State College

A Philipsburg man was seriously injured Wednesday night when his semitrailer overturned on a major highway near State College.

The 62-year-old crashed about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday in the 3800 block of the Mount Nittany Expressway, State College police Lt. Kelly Aston told the Centre Daily Times on Thursday. He was hauling cantaloupes and blueberries in the westbound lanes.

Borough police did not release details about how the crash occurred, citing an ongoing investigation. The department also declined to say if alcohol, drugs or speeding were believed to be factors.

The man was flown by medical helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries, Aston said.

The semitrailer rolled into the center median of the highway. All lanes in both directions were closed about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and the highway did not fully reopen until about 6 a.m. Thursday, Aston said.

There were 25 crashes with serious injuries between 2014 and 2023 in College Township, state Department of Transportation data showed. That was the sixth most of any municipality in Centre County.
