Plane crashes into popular Northern California golf course

(FOX40.COM) — A popular golf course in Northern California was the subject of a plane crash on Sunday afternoon.

Around 1 p.m., the Sacramento Fire Department responded to the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex for reports of an aircraft emergency. After crews arrived, they found a plane that crash-landed on the premises. The pilot told officials he departed from McClellan Airbase. Shortly after, he experienced mechanical and engine failure at about 400 feet in the sky.

“He picked a golf course which is a pretty good location – nice and open,” Sacramento Fire Captain Justin Sylvia said. “It’s very fortunate that no one was injured, including the pilot. He had a minor laceration to his hand.”

Sylvia said the plane is currently leaking some fuel which has sparked some concerns but is being monitored.

People who witnessed the crash were left in shock.

“We heard a boom, but we didn’t know what it was,” said Tim Cowan who was golfing when the plane crashed. He said he plays at Haggin Oaks regularly. “This is a first. I guess cross it off my bucket list.”

The plane reportedly grazed the side of a golf course building but avoided crashing directly into it.

“I was out on a range – I work here and I was picking up balls Charlie Lewis “I’m grateful that nothing was too damaged. The clubhouse could have probably been completely destroyed,” said Charlie Lewis, a golf course employee.

He said he was on the range picking up balls when he heard a chopper above him.

“I saw it and it was like nothing I’ve ever seen before,” Lewis said. “It was pretty insane.”

The incident is currently under investigation by the Sacramento Police Department and the Federal Aviation Administration.
