Police call Las Vegas casino stabbings ‘unprovoked,’ believe man was selling drugs before slashings
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Detectives describe the stabbings of two Red Rock Resort employees Saturday as “unprovoked” and believe the man accused was selling drugs in a bathroom beforehand, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained.
The stabbings and then shooting of the suspect, Shayne Sussman, 25, happened around 1 a.m. inside the casino on Charleston Boulevard near the 215 Beltway. The 8 News Now Investigators first identified Sussman on Saturday.
Sussman is accused of stabbing one employee in the face and neck and another employee in the back, documents said.
According to documents, the stabbings occurred near a hotel elevator bank at 12:59 a.m. One employee was polishing a floor area and had opened a door to continue his work when Sussman allegedly attacked him, documents said. Shortly after that, Sussman allegedly attacked the second employee who was walking through the hallway at the end of his shift.
At 1:01 a.m., hotel security came into contact with Sussman outside of a restaurant near the casino area. Sussman reportedly told the officer, “My heart. My heart is racing!” while holding a bloody knife. Staff described Sussman as “extremely under the influence.” A security officer then spotted a knife in Sussman’s hand.
Another security officer then shot Sussman once as he ran from other security staff, documents said.
A security officer who was off duty at the time but who was in the casino as a patron said Sussman allegedly offered to sell him drugs in a restroom multiple times, documents said.
Sussman faces three counts of attempted murder and five counts of battery with the use of a deadly weapon, records said. He did not appear in person for his probable cause hearing on Sunday for medical reasons.
Judge Amy Ferreira declined to set bail during the hearing. Sussman was due to return to court on Tuesday. A booking photo was unavailable Monday.
A memo sent to Red Rock team members, obtained by 8newsnow.com, said the team was “shaken up” by the violence.
