Rainbow Six Siege could “last forever”

Rainbow Six Siege director Alexander Karpazis believes the widely loved Ubisoft title could “last forever.” He also squashes any hope there was for a percieved sequel to the ongoing live service 5v5 romp.

During Siege Invitational 2024 in Brazil, Karpazis held a group interview where PC Gamer reports the event led to the question being raised. Nine years on and the game is still being actively supported, which we don’t have to tell you is a miracle with Ubisoft involved. But, with nine years in the bag, some are echoing issues with the game, particularly, bugs are everywhere and the blame has been placed on the legacy engine, Ubisoft Anvil, that the game is built on.

When questioned about a potential sequel, the director not only refuted the idea, but even went as far as calling it a “mistake” if Ubi went on to make it. He then pointed to other games that follow through with sequels, only for them to “drop the ball” due to the sequel’s similarities with its precursor.

Now, he didn’t name names, but if we had to guess, Karpazis is probably talking about Overwatch 2, which was overwhelmingly panned over the game being basically the same as its precursor, but with the promise of a wide-spanning PvE mode, which was eventually reworked into something extremely different. It fundamentally played the same with some meta changes, but overall, the community wasn’t very pleased with the game even before the full scope of PvE was given the boot.

So basically, don’t go expecting Rainbow Six Siege 2 while he’s at Ubi.

“The idea of switching engines to something that can be off-the-shelf ready simply doesn’t answer the needs of a really competitive and demanding game like Siege. I’m not going to name names, but you see games that did go through sequels and just completely drop the ball because they have to remake every single thing that they did in that first game.”
