Repair of ‘the dip’ to close stretch of I-75 for several weekends in October

Weekend travel in and out of Cincinnati this month will be a little tricky.

A stretch of northbound Interstate 75 near the Norwood Lateral will be closed for multiple weekends in October to correct a section of the pavement locals have dubbed as “the dip,” according to Ohio Department of Transportation spokesperson Kathleen Fuller.

The repair work will require the closure of all I-75 northbound lanes between the off-ramp and on-ramp for the Norwood Lateral in the Bond Hill area. The department’s contractor, Sunesis Construction Company, was awarded approximately $1.9 million to complete the project and will be installing a load transfer platform to support the pavement.

“(‘The dip’) is an abandoned sewer tile that is not in use anymore and it is well below the surface of the roadway, but it continues to become more and more deteriorated and that’s what causing the road to sink,” said Fuller, who added the stretch of roadway is also susceptible to flooding.

The first closure is scheduled for this weekend, lasting from 10 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Monday. The highway will close again during the same times on the following weekend, from Oct. 11 to 14.

A third closure will likely be necessary for the weekend of Oct. 25 to 28, but that is dependent on the weather, Fuller said. She added they will not close the highway during the weekend of Oct. 18 to 21 in order to avoid disrupting Blink Cincinnati festivities.

Fuller encourages motorists to plan accordingly for these closures, especially those attending the Bengals game at Paycor Stadium on Sunday or their Oct. 27 game should the highway close for a third weekend.

There will be a signed detour by way of Norwood Lateral eastbound to Interstate 71 North and Interstate 275 westbound. Alternative routes from downtown Cincinnati include I-71 and Interstate 74 to I-275.

The interim completion for the entire project is scheduled for mid-November of this year.
