Riot x Tencent’s Collaboration Will Not Result In A New Valve-Like Hero Shooter, Confirms Dev

Right now the gaming world is hyped up with Deadlock. As of now, the game is testing phase and is only playable by getting a playtester invite. However, there is no specific release date has been confirmed by Valve yet. Still, it doesn’t stop fans from anticipating the title.

This action-adventure game combines the elements of a hero shooter and a MOBA title. Despite being in the playtesting phase since 2023, the game had reached over 100,000 concurrent players in May 2024. Seeing the success of this title, any company would want to make a game like this, but not Riot Games for sure.

Riot Games Is Not Making Any ‘Deadlock-like’ Game

It’s pretty tough to put Deadlock in a single genre of gaming. As previously mentioned, this game contains aspects from both MOBA and hero shooter genres. Riot has games in both genres (League of Legends and Valorant, respectively), but it doesn’t have a genre-defining title like Valve’s Shooter.

There were many rumors about Riot making a game like Deadlock, but all of those were recently thrashed by the senior director of corporate communications, Joe Hixson. There was a tweet containing an image of an article that stated that there is a $200 million deal between Riot and its parent company Tencent to make a game that will compete with Deadlock.

However, Hixson retweeted that post claiming all of these rumors to be false. He also informed us the alleged article is actually fake. Hixson made us aware of the fact that funding in this kind of big company doesn’t operate like this. So, this is not how Tencent funds Riot Games actually.

What Is Riot Cooking Then?

It might be a bit disappointing that there is nothing like Deadlock being cooked at Riot Games. However, the exciting fact is that there are “a lot” of other things cooking in the company. So, fans can expect a lot of new IPs in the near future, for sure. Although Hixson didn’t go into detail on what kind of games we will get from Riot.

Now the rumor itself is pretty weird, actually. It’s true that Riot doesn’t have a game like Deadlock, but they already have two worldbreaking titles, which are bossing the two respective genres, which Valve’s shooter has mixed. So, if Riot serves any IP in the future, then it will be something unique, something new. Not a mixture of Valorant and League of Legends, for sure. Also, Deadlock is not even on the market right now, so it’s too young to inspire competitors like Riot Games.
