Russell Crowe picks Amy Shark for role in her ‘very first movie’

Russell Crowe has cast Australian singer Amy Shark in her big screen debut.

Shark – real name Amy Louise Billings – has travelled to Thailand for filming of Crowe’s sports drama Beast in Me.

The film is a revenge story infused with mixed martial arts.

Shark will play Crowe’s daughter, as the Australian screen icon coaches a vengeful fighter.

The production is aligned with Singapore-based fighting league One Championship, and is being filmed at an indoor stadium in Bangkok.

Footage from a live One Championship fight night will be used in the film.

“Bangkok for the next week to become a movie star,” Shark posted earlier this week, along with a picture holding the film script.

Crowe and Shark have met before. Shark pulled Crowe onstage at a huge festival gig in Canberra in 2023 to sing together.

The 38-year-old singer-songwriter – and eight-time ARIA winner – is no stranger to lights and cameras, but Beast in Me will be her big screen debut.

“I’m in Bangkok for a week, filming my very first movie, like real movie I guess. There’s so much to say on it so I’ll just wait to fill you guys in more – there’s just so much to talk about,” she says online.

Fellow Australians Daniel MacPherson, Luke Hemsworth and Bren Foster also play leading roles in front of the camera, being directed by fellow Aussie Tyler Atkins.

According to the Internet Movie Database, Shark will appear in a second film which is also in production; an offering involving Chuck Norris, Vanilla Ice and Sophie Monk, where passengers on a Sydney to Los Angeles flight become infected with zombie viruses.

Crowe, aged 60, has amassed three best actor Oscar nominations, including one win in his career.
