San Angelo ISD under investigation by Office for Civil Rights

Three cases have been opened by the federal Office for Civil Rights concerning possible discrimination at San Angelo ISD.

As a public service, the Office for Civil Rights publishes a list of elementary, secondary and post-secondary institutions that are currently under investigation, according to its website.

SAISD has three pending cases that were filed on May 3 with the U.S. Department of Education.

“An institution named on this list means that OCR has initiated an investigation of a case concerning that institution,” according to the website. “Inclusion on the list does not mean that OCR has made a decision about the case.”

Here are the three pending investigations:

Disability discrimination concerning Gifted and Talented, STEM, College and Career Readiness, and Career and Technical Education programs.

Title VI discrimination concerning the same programs as above.

Title VI discrimination concerning English Language Learners

The Standard-Times reached out to SAISD for a statement Wednesday morning on the cases but did not receive a response by print deadline.

The newspaper has filed a freedom of information act request with the OCR for more information on the investigation.
