Santa Monica’s Atreus Spin-Off Has a Shot, But Only If It Fixes Ragnarok’s Most Frustrating Flaw

After God of War Ragnarok fans have been wondering about what next is in line for Santa Monica Studio. There has been a surge in demand for a game centered around Atreus since Kratos seems to have taken a back seat, and Atreus stands strong next in line.

However, if it were to become a reality, the developer would need to make some amends regarding the most frustrating flaw in God of War Ragnarok. This flaw drew heavy criticism, and it should not be repeated again if Santa Monica wants the universe of God of War to survive.

Atreus Might Get A Game of His Own

The universe of Kratos seems to have been nearing its end. His biggest motivation now in the recent games has only been to protect his son and make amends for the mistakes made by him in the past. The father-son relationship reflected in the recent games has been a central theme.

Kratos is not motivated by his selfish desire for power anymore. His fire has worn off, and he lives off in a cool land full of snow amidst a never-ending winter, which could also serve as a metaphor for how he feels within. He only lives to fulfill his wife’s wishes and help his son Atreus find answers about Loki and his place in the world as a god’s son.

All of this accounts for a pretty interesting narrative for a game centred around Atreus in his quest for further answers about the meaning of his life and identity while also not making the same mistakes as his father in the same quest.

Santa Monica too should steer away from the mistakes of the past. God of War Ragnarok was criticized for being dragged at certain points, with players wanting to skip past those parts. This resulted in a faulty pacing, which did not do justice to the story of the game.

Santa Monica Should Fix The Pacing In The Next Game

A game centred around Atreus would be fun given Santa Monica makes amends for its mistakes. The pacing was not Ragnarok’s strongest point, and it got annoying after a point. God of War has always been crisp with its narrative, and that is one of the biggest reasons why the pacing in the recent game felt faulty.

Atreus deserves his own game that will take us into a different world in the universe of God of War. This could be the start of a completely new era of God of War in which Atreus does things differently from his father when he was young.

Although it sounds exciting on paper, executing it won’t be as easy since the bar set by the older games is already too high to reach; nevertheless, it does not mean that it does not deserve an attempt. What do you think about it? Let us know in the comments below.
