Search resumes for 11-year-old boy swept out to sea

A search is resuming for a boy swept out to sea on the NSW Central Coast.

The 11-year-old was walking with his three siblings and his father at The Entrance when disaster struck about 5pm on Sunday.

The group attempted to cross a channel between an estuary and the ocean, when the eldest boy was swept into the ocean by the current.

While two bystanders looked after the other three children, the father tried to reach the boy but was unsuccessful, police said on Monday.

Local police, surf life savers, water police and rescue helicopters launched an extensive land, air and sea search but could not find the child before dusk.

The same agencies were expected to resume the search about 8am on Monday.

The Entrance is at the mouth of Tuggerah Lake and is a popular weekend and holiday destination, 100 km north of Sydney.
