Second Screen Feature Reportedly Not the Only Major Change, Joy-Con Tweaks Show Nintendo is Going All Out

With the current Nintendo Switch having revolutionized hybrid gaming, expectations are sky-high for what Team Red has planned for its successor, which could include improved performance or game-changing hardware.

That said, though, the recent leaks have shed some more light on all the changes coming with the console. Apart from all the performance tweaks, the most fascinating bit about the next Switch is how it may be taking the company back to its roots in the most radical way possible.

Based on what we know so far, the Switch 2 will reportedly feature performance comparable to the PlayStation 4 Pro when docked, powered by Nvidia’s Tegra T239 processor.

While this places the Switch 2 half a generation behind the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in terms of raw hardware power, we also know that Nintendo always seems more focused on innovation than chasing the highest specs.

One of the most intriguing rumors is the potential inclusion of a second screen. Considering that the recently leaked renders hint at the possibility of two USB-C ports, there is speculation that the Switch 2 could support a second display, perhaps becoming similar to its predecessor, the 3DS, in the process.

Not only that, the Joy-Con controllers are getting some significant tweaks, with redesigned SR and SL buttons and different LED placement. These changes mean that Nintendo is looking to improve the overall ergonomics and functionality of the Joy-Cons. Possibly, it may even address some of the past concerns over drift issues with newly designed sticks.

Now, these are nice innovations, but there is also a growing concern that the introduction of new features, such as the second screen, hints at a future where Nintendo sells more proprietary accessories separately, adding potential costs for consumers similar to the PlayStation 5 Slim/5 Pro.

These hardware changes could shift the way players interact with the console, making gaming more dynamic. However, while exciting, they may also signal a push toward more exclusive add-ons, a move that Nintendo has previously embraced with its various peripherals.

What are the other tweaks that people are expecting out of the Nintendo Switch 2?

Along with all that we’ve mentioned above, the Switch 2 leaks, pleasingly enough, don’t stop at improved visuals and controller upgrades.

For instance, many reports suggest a better battery life is in the works, thanks to a 20Wh battery, which is expected to last longer than the current OLED model’s 9 hours under optimal conditions. This could result in handheld play-times ranging from 6 to 12 hours, a notable improvement that handheld fans will appreciate.

Another rather intriguing rumor is a potential boost in docked mode, similar to how the current Switch enhances performance when connected to a TV. This “boost mode,” possibly utilizing the power of DLSS and frame generation, could mean smoother frame rates, better resolution, and an overall higher-quality gaming experience while docked.

With Nintendo sticking to Nvidia’s chips rather than opting for AMD’s more power-hungry offerings, many are expecting a proper upgrade that will better balance performance and energy efficiency.

Outside of these hardware improvements, fans are also excited about the possibility of a stronger focus on third-party support. While third-party titles were initially strong on the original Switch, they dwindled over time, leaving Nintendo Switch as more of a indie haven with only its first-party games making up for the AAA side of things.

With the right launch lineup and a push toward more indie and third-party games, undoubtedly, the Nintendo Switch 2 could be a real winner for this console generation.
