Second year for Tynwald Youth Select Committee

A committee that enables political engagement for young people on the Isle of Man is set to return for a second year.

First launched in October 2023, the Tynwald Youth Select Committee is made up of young people aged between 15 and 24 who scrutinise topics of importance to them.

Applications for the committee, which comprises seven participants who choose an inquiry topic and present a report to Tynwald, are open until 15 November.

Speaker of the House of Keys Juan Watterson said the initiative was a “valuable tool” for the parliament to hear “directly from our young people”.

Tynwald was “always looking for ways to engage with different groups outside of its four walls”, he added.

The committee for the 2023-24 parliamentary year looked into affordable housing for young people, with a report set to be published and laid before Tynwald later this year.

The year-long opportunity mirrors the parliament’s select committee structure, with three initial hearing dates set to take place on 11 December, 15 January and 12 February.

Drop-in sessions for those interested will be held at the office of the Clerk of Tynwald in the Legislative Buildings on 30 October from 12:00 to 13:00 GMT, and 1 November from 16:00 to 17:00.
