Chimney Rock and Lake Lure in western North Carolina appear to have been devastated by flooding after Hurricane Helene swept through the area. Census data from 2022 indicate 220 people live in Chimney Rock, about 1300 in Lake Lure.

Air rescue operations remained ongoing in Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Village on Saturday afternoon, as family members frantically sought details on their loved ones’ whereabouts with phone lines down and limited internet access.

Rutherford County Emergency Management said responders had rescued more than 100 people in the Lake Lure and Chimney Rock area on Saturday and rescue efforts would continue into Saturday night.

Rutherford County Emergency Management secured air rescue resources to airlift stranded individuals out of the area. Once evacuated, people will be transported for RS Central High School to receive further assistance.

“Please be aware that cellular and phone communication is currently extremely limited in the area. We understand the concern and uncertainty this may cause, and we kindly ask for your patience as these rescue efforts will take some time,” officials said. “As soon as we receive the names of those rescued, we will make every effort to reach out to families and individuals who have inquired about their loved ones. Your understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated during this challenging time.”
