Sequel Needs to Approach Petrificus Totalus Charm Differently That Stays True to the Lore

The spell Petrificus Totalus is iconic in the Harry Potter universe and is used to paralyze opponents with a single incantation. In Hogwarts Legacy, this spell is tied to stealth and is often used to silently incapacitate enemies. For Hogwarts Legacy 2, Avalanche Software should make this spell more advanced than it was in the first game.

More experienced wizards should be able to cast it non-verbally and use it on multiple enemies at once. Even in the original Harry Potter books and movies, we hardly saw things like non-verbal spell usage get explored. The Hogwarts Legacy sequel is the perfect chance.

How to Use The Petrificus Totalus Charm In Hogwarts Legacy

In Hogwarts Legacy, Petrificus Totalus is primarily used within the game’s stealth mechanics. The charm is introduced early in the main quest after players unlock the Disillusionment Charm to sneak through the Restricted Section of the library.

Once close enough to a target, a button prompt allows players to cast the spell and instantly paralyze their opponent without confrontation. This makes the charm essential for silently eliminating enemies, offering an assassin-like approach to situations.

With the game getting a DLC soon, there are a lot of ideas floating around about what it could bring. And what we could get beyond it, in the sequel.

In the Harry Potter lore, experienced witches and wizards often cast spells non-verbally, a skill that takes practice and mastery. Petrificus Totalus is a relatively simple one that would be perfect for non-verbal casting in Hogwarts Legacy 2. It wouldn’t change the gameplay or impact of it very much, but it would incorporate the lore better.

Additionally, allowing the spell to target multiple enemies at once could add an exciting dynamic to combat. In the books, wizards have been shown to target multiple foes with their spells, and Petrificus Totalus could work similarly.

The Sequel Has So Many Different Possibilities To Explore

Another interesting thing the sequel could do is introduce characters from the books, as opposed to focusing exclusively on brand-new ones. Characters like Mad-Eye Moody or Professor Snape could serve as mentors, teaching advanced techniques like non-verbal casting and the ability to manipulate spells in creative ways.

If you think about this a bit you’ll realize that it’s very unlikely. This is because Hogwarts Legacy is set in the late 1800s but the original books are set from 1991. But since there’s been no information about the sequel, there’s no reason to think it couldn’t be set in a different time.

Imagine a sequence where Hermione Granger herself teaches the player how to improve their non-verbal casting, or where Dumbledore instructs them on using the spell on multiple targets. Especially non-verbal casting since Dumbledore is as veteran as wizards can get.

These character cameos wouldn’t need to dominate the story but could serve as valuable touchpoints, linking the game more closely to the original Harry Potter world.

Fans will probably agree since one of the biggest pieces of feedback the first game got was that players wanted to play more as students. Yes, the action-packed story is fun, but let us just be Hogwarts students, please.
