Severe weather warnings issued for southeastern San Diego County
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Severe weather warnings were issued by the National Weather Service for inland San Diego County communities on Thursday due to thunderstorms producing high wind, heavy rain and potential hail in the area.
A flash flood warning was issued for communities including Campo and Potrero, south of the Interstate 8. A severe thunderstorm statement was also issued for the area around Descanso, Jacumba, Boulevard and Live Oak Springs.
According to the National Weather Service, the thunderstorm was first located by radar near Lake Morena around 4:32 p.m. and it appeared to be stationary. Dark clouds could be seen by SkyFOX/KUSI in the Sky, which was flying nearby just before 5 p.m.
The special weather statement will be in place until 5:30 p.m., while the flash flood warning will be in place until 9 p.m.
According to NWS, winds with gusts of upwards of 60 miles per hour could occur while the warnings are in place, as well as small hail and frequent lightning. Damage to roofs, siding and trees is expected during this time.
Maps showing the areas impacted by the severe weather warnings can be found below.
Forecasters say anyone in the impacted area should move inside or to the lowest floor of a building for protection from the thunderstorm.
“Hail, damaging wind, and continuous cloud to ground lightning are occurring with this storm. Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature’s leading killers,” NWS wrote in the warning. “Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.”
