Shattered Space Is Simply a Band-Aid for Bethesda’s Bigger Problems, Starfield Should Never Have Been a Game That Needed Saving
Starfield is cited by Todd Howards as Skyrim set in space, but it failed to set the space on fire. It already feels like a ‘Shattered Space’ before the arrival of Shattered Space; its planned DLC for September 30, 2024. The irony of the name is fans are hoping it’ll pull the game back together.
Bethesda too is dwarfing in popularity with such broken products, similar to the other big shots like Activision, EA, Ubisoft, and more. I don’t want to think about the downfall of the video games industry ever but how can we unsee the failures that are piling up?
Starfield Echoes the Empty Space, Some Company Would Actually be Appreciable
If video games don’t get ample time for development, the chances are that they won’t remain afloat for much time. Fans won’t enjoy it like what happened with popular military shooters Call of Duty and Battlefield. Both of those games didn’t even get a couple of years of development time before being shoved out the door.
But what’s with Bethesda’s space exploration game? It took eight years to finally hit the shelves and what happened wasn’t expected. It shouldn’t have been a stab into gamer’s guts that needs stitching up with a DLC.
No Man’s Sky is often compared to it; that doesn’t mean it has to be a competitor in every aspect. It was supposed to the product that revived the downfall Bethesda had been seeing with games like Fallout 76 and even Fallout 4, which was a better game than 76, but still wasn’t up to the standard set by Fallout 3.
If the developers were thinking of giving the space-exploration game a feeling one might get upon reaching the stars, they succeeded in it, because that feels empty. Maybe some extra quests and characters could have kept the fans from departing.
When it comes to fixing those bugs fans have highlighted, modders proved to be more capable of repairing the ship. It would’ve been great if developers did that instead as they are supposed to, or better still if they did that during its eight-year-long development cycle.
Shattered Space Must Assure it’s Not the Last Starfield DLC
Microsoft made sure that Starfield would not be available on PlayStation at launch after it acquired ZeniMax Media in 2021. It was probably hoping for the sort of early success that Helldivers 2 saw within gaming community as a worthwhile exclusive title. But then again, the space-exploration game didn’t really become a hit like Helldivers 2.
At least it is still an Xbox exclusive for now, but then again, PlayStation users may not have to organize a petition campaign to bring it to their console going by what we have seen happen to the upcoming Indiana Jones game published by Bethesda.
Starfield was Bethesda’s first new intellectual property in twenty-five years. The studio has been into space combat games since the 90s and Starfield ought to be a really passionate project if that’s true. But the end result isn’t what passion looks like.
After a year of transcending through a rocky path, people associated with the game must care enough now to amend their mistakes with a new expansion pack. There may be more to come, but this one perhaps decides what the future of the game could look like.
Despite such uncertainties about its future, which some fans are hopeful for, Phil Spencer believes that users will be playing the game for the next decade. That is one big claim, given that the next DLC could make or break it entirely.
Has Bethesda ruined its reputation beyond repair? Not really, but it is in a bad phase, suffering from severe damage optically. That said, it is not the only one. On the positive side, it does have a chance to rise amid the poor state of the rest of the current video game industry.
AAA experiences shouldn’t cause trouble but create an environment for the fans to enjoy their time. If they are planning to stay afloat for a decade or more, issues like the ones present in Starfield certainly won’t help.
Its New Game Plus feature allows users to again take on the quests having minor plot twists. But that is something worth considering; when the users are having trouble going through the game for the first time, why would they do it again to see some small twists?
No one would want their efforts, – especially when they took eight years, – to go down the drain within a couple of years. The Shattered Space DLC will hopefully assure that Starfield can continue to live on for a long time to come. How was your experience with the game? Let us know in the comments section below.
