Showrunner and exec producers all left the project- Worst Possible Update About God of War Live Action Series
God of War is one of the most popular gaming franchises in the world right now. This action-adventure series began its journey in 2005 and, from there, went on to achieve so many accolades. The franchise recently shaped its dominance in the PC arena as well, with Valhalla in December 2023.
Just like any other popular gaming franchise, God of War also got the shouts for a live-action adaptation. As a consequence, Prime Video took the honors on its shoulders and announced a live-action title based on this long-hailed gaming series. However, now there is a heartbreaking update for the fans who have been eagerly waiting for this adaptation to happen soon.
God of War Live-Action Adaptation Development is Starting from the Scratch
Prime Video announced in 2022 that they are working on a live-action adaptation of God of War. That means this project has been in development for two years, so far as a lot of things have progressed. However, despite being in development for a substantial amount of time, the process might have hit the reset button as showrunner and executive producer Rafe Judkins, along with EPs Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, have reportedly left the enterprise.
This trio has already completed multiple scripts for the first season, so their departure would be a huge loss for this project. As per Deadline, Sony and Amazon MGM Studios are jointly running this live-action venture and are now planning to do over the whole series development.
Judkins is right now the showrunner for another Prime Video series, Wheel of Time, along with Otsby and Fergus, who have been praised by Amazon, MGM, and Sony. However, still, the studios are looking for a different creative direction. Still, it makes us relieved that the studio’s plan to hire a brand new writers’ room is an indication of the project’s high priority in the company.
Who Can Play Kratos in God of War Live-Action Adaptation?
As of now, there’s no official confirmation on who is going to play the role of the most popular character in the franchise. However, this didn’t stop speculation around the community. Many think Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the perfect fit for the role because of his muscular look and aggressive attitude.
On the other hand, the voice actor of Kratos in God of War (2018) and Ragnarok (2022), Christopher Judge, is a favorite pick for many fans. Although God of War (2018) director Cory Barlog had already had his say when the series wasn’t even announced.
Amidst the Johnson vs. Judge battle, Aquaman-famed Jason Momoma has also been thrown around the role. Along with them, Paul Levesque, aka Triple H, can be a good choice for the role, again for the muscular role and serious facial attributes. But unlike The Rock, Triple H is still a part of WWE.
There is no set release date for the project, but since the timer has been reset on production, it’s fair to assume a live-action God of War is a few years away from hitting the screen.
