Snapshot of day seven at the Australian Open
SNAPSHOT FROM DAY SEVEN OF THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN AT MELBOURNE PARK:
PLAYER OF THE DAY: At 20, Alex Michelsen is the youngest American since Pete Sampras and four-time AO champion Andre Agassi at the 1990 US Open to record multiple top-20 wins at a grand slam after adding 19th seed Karen Khachanov to his list of victims that also includes 2023 finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas.
STAT OF THE DAY: German Eva Lys is the first qualifying lucky loser to make the women’s last 16 since the Australian Open moved to Melbourne Park in 1988 after continuing her fairytale run with a three-set win over Jaqueline Cristian.
PIC OF THE DAY:
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I will hopefully see my physio and he does some magic.” – Former Wimbledon champion and 2023 AO women’s runner-up Elena Ryabkina admitted her tournament was in doubt after fighting through a back injury to beat Dayana Yastremska.
THE MOMENT: Alex de Minaur’s incredible reflexes might have saved him from a two-set deficit in a tense four-set third-round win over Francisco Cerundolo.
TOURNAMENT SUMMARY: While de Minaur and Michelsen marched on, the American’s fourth-seeded countryman Taylor Fritz was eliminated by French veteran Gael Monfils in the biggest boilover of the Open thus far. World No.2 Iga Swiatek led the seeds through on a mostly upset-free day in the women’s event.
