Snow Sunday then frigid weather as Siberian air bring plummeting temperatures to Augusta County
AUGUSTA COUNTY — On Sunday, there’s a fast moving storm tracking off to our east that may bring some snow to the area, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Dan Pydynowski.
“It does look cold enough in most of the county that we could get grazed with a little bit of snowfall on Sunday,” said Pydynowski. “There might be some mixing, or some ice, but it should primarily be cold enough that we should be looking at some snow.”
AccuWeather forecast calls for 1-2 inches snow Sunday and bitter cold temperatures falling to zero and below zero degrees Monday and Tuesday nights in Augusta County.
For most of Augusta County, including Staunton and Waynesboro, the average snowfall amount expected is between 1-2 inches, he said. Given that we are on the fringe of the storm and west of it that could limit our precipitations, he added.
“It looks like snow would move in early Sunday, maybe mid-morning,” said Pydynowski. “It could be as early as 8 or 9 a.m. and then things could wrap up pretty quickly by 4-5 p.m. Sunday afternoon.”
Siberian air brings frigid weather to Augusta County
After the snowfall stops, temperatures are going to plummet as Siberian air lunges eastward which means any type of wintry mix and untreated surfaces will turn to ice overnight Sunday disrupting travel on Monday. The colder temperatures expected next week means surfaces are expected to remain icy until the middle of next week.
AccuWeather forecast calls for 1-2 inches snow Sunday and bitter cold temperatures falling to zero and below zero degrees Monday and Tuesday nights in Augusta County.
“We have a very cold air mass moving in Sunday night,” said Pydynowski. “Temperatures could easily drop down into the single digits. During the day on Monday, highs may struggle to reach 20 degrees.”
The coldest nights, he said, will be Monday and Tuesday where temperatures may fall to minus 5-6 degrees below zero. “It’s still pretty cold Wednesday but then Thursday and beyond temperatures will start to moderate and trend up.”
AccuWeather forecast calls for temperatures up to 14 degrees during the day Wednesday and then falling to 5 degrees at night. Thursday’s forecast calls for partial sunshine with temperatures rising to 30 degrees, lows around 17 at night. Friday’s forecast is a little warmer with sunny skies and temperatures around 34 degrees during the day, lows in the teens at night.
