Sonic 3 Will Tease New Character At The End Of The Movie

Sonic fans only have just over a month before the third film arrives in theaters on December 20. The threequel has Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles teaming up to take down the mysterious Shadow, voiced by Keanu Reeves. Sonic 3 also introduces Ivo Robotnik’s father, Gerald, with Jim Carrey pulling double duty playing both father and son. However, director Jeff Fowler has confirmed that Shadow and Gerald won’t be the only new additions.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Fowler says that continuing with a tradition set by the first Sonic movie, a new character will make a small cameo appearance at the end of Sonic 3. Although he didn’t say who, deciding which character to bring in wasn’t easy.

“It’s fun to see the fan debates online about who’s coming up next, who’s going to be teased at the end of the film. We have a lot of the same conversations,” Fowler said. “We’ve all got our favorites on the filmmaking side, and we’re all making great cases for ‘it should be this one or that one.’ It is fun to keep that anticipation. This movie is no different in terms of teasing new characters.”

Obviously, the movies have broken away from the game’s chronological release order, as Sonic CD came before Sonic 3, where Knuckles was introduced. Sonic CD introduced Amy Rose, the infatuated pink hedgehog, to the video games–but she actually made her first appearance in Kenji Terada’s Sonic manga a year prior. She was redesigned a few years later–featuring her boots and hammer–for the Dreamcast’s Sonic Adventure in 1998.

Sonic 4 hasn’t been officially greenlit, but there’s a slew of Sonic characters to choose from to keep the franchise going for years to come.
