Sound system upgrade at Esperance theatre sets the stage for more musicals

Esperance’s historic Bijou Theatre will receive an upgraded sound system in time for an upcoming musical production thanks to a community funding initiative.

Esperance Theatre Guild, who owns and operates the heritage-listed theatre, was one of 13 successful Goldfields-Esperance applicants in the latest round of Southern Ports’ community investment program.

The theatre guild will install the new sound system in time for its upcoming production of Shrek — The Musical, which begins on November 15.

Esperance Theatre Guild president Barry Wroth said the upgraded equipment would help take the audience experience to a new level.

He said the success of Les Miserables last year indicated there was an appetite for musicals within the community.

“The community has shown they are interested in musical performances and to deliver those we need crisp high-quality audio systems in place,” Mr Wroth said.

“The Esperance Theatre Guild is thankful to Southern Ports for supporting our project and I’m sure we’ll be seeing plenty of their team in the front row during our next run of shows.”

Southern Ports regional manager Esperance Scott Bates said the authority’s community investment program supported positive community initiatives put forward by local groups.

“The Esperance Theatre Guild operates out of the oldest purpose-built theatre in WA and the group does a tremendous job entertaining our community,” Mr Bates said.

“We’re always keen to support groups promoting creative endeavours, especially in the case of the theatre guild which is also promoting the use of a beautiful old building with lots of history and ensuring it has a rich future.”

Esperance Theatre Guild was one of 13 successful Goldfields-Esperance applicants who shared in more than $40,000.

Successful applicants included Beaumont Community Association, Esperance District Football Association, Esperance Junior Cricket Association, Esperance Primary School, Esperance Soccer Association, Esperance Twilight Aerials Gymnastics Academy, Hopetoun Community Resource Centre, Nulsen Primary School, Rotary Club of Esperance, Shire of Esperance, Southern Bowling Zone, and Escare.

Applications for the next round of funding are open until Monday.
