South West WAFL Watch: Region’s talent set to be on display in grand final between East Perth and Peel Thunder
A litany of South West talent will be on display in the WAFL grand final between East Perth and Swan Districts at Optus Stadium on Sunday.
Minor premiers East Perth, who will be looking to win the flag for the first time since 2002, feature Scott Jones, Jacob Msando (both Busselton), Stan Wright (Dunsborough), Tom Graham (Donnybrook) and Sam Van Diemen (Bridgetown).
The quintet all performed strongly in a 28-point second qualifying final win over Swan Districts which sealed the Royals’ place in the season decider — Jones set the competition’s hit-out record with 81, Wright provided his trademark rebound off half-back with 25 disposals and Graham slotted three goals.
For the Thunder, Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault junior Ethan Hughes has continued to feature through the WAFL finals despite being delisted by the club’s AFL alignment partner Fremantle last week, being one of 12 Dockers the club is allowed to field.
Donnybrook’s Scott Tuia has sealed his place in Peel’s midfield this season, while fellow Don Joel Brown has been on the fringes of the side, playing in the first qualifying final but being omitted from the side for the semifinal.
Plenty of players from the region will also be on the field for the colts grand final between Swan Districts and Claremont, with eight South West young guns featuring for Swans in the preliminary final.
Cody Ryan, Lucas Andrews, Thomas Oliver (all Bunbury), Anthony Hansen, Leon Kickett (South Bunbury), Jessie Hollins, Colby McDonald (both Donnybrook) and Chayse Martinson (Carey Park) featured as the Swans punched their ticket to the season decider with a 13-point win over Subiaco.
