South32’s $3 billion Hermosa manganese-zinc mine wins US cash grant in push for battery metals processing

South32 will pocket $US166 million ($243m) from the US Government to get moving on a new manganese mine as well as a battery-grade processing refinery, as the super power stocks up on critical minerals.

Proceeds from the grant, revealed on Friday by the Department of Energy, will be put towards planning and building a battery-grade manganese facility in Southern Arizona, with the raw commodity to come from S32’s neighbouring US$2.1 billion ($3b) Hermosa project.
