Steven Spielberg Believes in the PC Master Race

It’s no secret that Steven Spielberg, the legendary director behind cinematic masterpieces like Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List, is a bit of a geek at heart. But did you know that he’s also a hardcore PC gamer?

In a recent interview, Spielberg’s son Max, himself a game developer and co-founder of the studio Fuzzybot, shed some light on his father’s gaming habits and their shared love for the medium.

As it turns out, the elder Spielberg is not only a passionate gamer but also a staunch believer in the superiority of the keyboard and mouse!

The Spielberg Gaming Connection

Max Spielberg revealed that his father’s love for gaming was actually the catalyst for his own interest in the medium. “He loves gaming. He’s the one who got me into it. He plays games. He’s a big PC gamer. So that’s kind of our bonding point as well,” Max shared.

The father-son duo even has a system in place for staying up-to-date on the latest and greatest in the world of PC gaming. And, as it turns out, Steven Spielberg is a massive fan of the Call of Duty series:

“He’s like, ‘Hey, what’s good? What Call of Duty should I be playing? Send me a list of the top five shooters and I’ll get them downloaded, then we can play them together when you come over to the house.”

This revelation may not come as a surprise to some, given Spielberg’s well-known love for World War II stories and his own contributions to the genre with films like Saving Private Ryan and the Medal of Honor video game series.

That said, don’t expect to run into the Oscar-winning director in a multiplayer lobby anytime soon. Max clarified that his father sticks to the single-player campaigns, which is probably for the best. After all, no one wants to be the one to tell Steven Spielberg to “git gud” after a particularly brutal match.

The Keyboard and Mouse Conundrum

Steven Spielberg’s love for PC gaming comes with one significant caveat: he’s a keyboard and mouse purist. Max revealed that he’s been trying to get his father to play the Uncharted series, which seems like a natural fit given its cinematic qualities and Indiana Jones-esque adventures.

But Spielberg’s response was unequivocal:

So he’s big into story games and I’m always trying to get him to play Uncharted because, hey, it’s Indiana Jones! and I’m like, ‘Hey, you’d appreciate this.’ But he’s like, ‘I can’t do controllers. I can only do keyboard and mouse.’

It’s a bit of a head-scratcher, considering that the Uncharted series is now available on PC, thanks to the release of the Legacy of Thieves Collection in 2022. Theoretically, Spielberg could enjoy Nathan Drake’s adventures with his preferred input method.

However, as any Uncharted fan will tell you, there’s something about playing these games with a controller that just feels right. The series was designed with console controls in mind, and while the PC port is excellent, it’s hard to deny that a gamepad is the way to go for the full Uncharted experience.

As for what’s next for the Spielberg family, Max is currently working on his studio’s upcoming game, Lynked: Banner of the Spark, while Steven is gearing up for his next film, the tentatively titled The Dish, set for release in 2026. We may never see Steven Spielberg playing Uncharted, but who knows? Maybe one day he’ll come around to the joys of analog sticks and shoulder buttons.

In the meantime, we’ll just have to content ourselves with the image of one of the world’s most celebrated filmmakers hunched over a keyboard, frantically mashing keys as he tries to take down the latest Call of Duty villain. It’s a mental image that’s sure to bring a smile to the face of any gamer, regardless of their preferred platform.
