Steven Spielberg “Loves Call of Duty” But Won’t Play a PlayStation Exclusive That Took Heavy Inspiration from Indiana Jones

Steven Spielberg is often regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, yet many may not be aware that the legend is also quite into gaming, with a particular fondness for PC Shooters.

Curiously, despite his love for shooters, Spielberg has often avoided playing the one series that feels tailor-made for him to experience, usually considered as a tribute to the auteur’s own Indy flicks.

Spielberg Doesn’t Want to Play the Uncharted Series, Despite His Son’s Requests

Uncharted has been one of PlayStation’s flagships since the seventh generation of console gaming. Many love it for its storytelling, action set pieces, and irresistible charm of its cast of characters—the primary reasons people continue to wait for another entry in the series.

Even the first game, which was more of a miss than a hit, was praised for its world and for drawing inspiration from the early Indiana Jones movies—featuring the same level of high-stakes adventures and ancient, slightly supernatural mysteries.

However, despite all the similarities between the two franchises, Spielberg seems somewhat uninterested in giving the series a try, even at the behest of his son, Max Spielberg.

So, why would someone who created Indiana Jones be disinterested in a game that pays homage to his own works? Well, as Spielberg Junior explained in a recent interview, his father always prefers PC Gaming with a mouse and keyboard as his weapon of choice. Essentially, the man doesn’t like playing his games using controllers.

Some within the PC Master Race may see this as an incredibly wise decision. But, regardless, it’s still a shame, considering the artistic parallels between Spielberg’s films and the journeys Nathan Drake embarks upon, as well as the fact that the first three games just didn’t arrive on PC.

While we hope Spielberg and Max continue to bond over their shared love for Call of Duty campaigns, it’s hard not to wonder what the filmmaker would make of Uncharted‘s breathtaking set pieces, memorable characters, and delicately woven narrative.

Even if Spielberg Won’t, Make Sure to Give the Uncharted Series a Shot Yourself

Now, Spielberg will most likely remain reluctant to pick up a controller for Uncharted, but that most certainly shouldn’t deter you from experiencing the series.

With four mainline games, the series has become kind of a benchmark for storytelling in games that mimic those produced in Hollywood. Plus, these are damn good games to boot, anyway.

While heavily replicated, Uncharted’s seamless blend of action, adventure, and character depth isn’t something you can find satisfyingly elsewhere.

The technical achievements alone, especially the improvements in gameplay, visuals, and character development over the course of the series, makes the series a must-play for any fan of narrative-driven games.

Not to mention, if you’ve been a fan of Naughty Dog’s recent games, then give the original trilogy a shot. The first three games, after all, form the roots of the studio’s more ambitious future projects.

That said, as Naughty Dog continues to push boundaries, their next project will hopefully be another stunner. Whether it builds on the legacy of Uncharted or The Last of Us, it’s clear the studio has a bright future in crafting prestige media in gaming, and it’s time for you to jump on this train if you haven’t already.
