Summer Game Fest returns June 7 with new trailer
Summer Game Fest is right around the corner, with the main show airing on June 7, and organizer and host Geoff Keighley has released a trailer for the event. This trailer highlighted multiple games that have already been released, possibly hinting at new DLC for existing titles or other exciting news to come.
The trailer for Summer Games Fest debuted on The Game Awards’ YouTube channel on June 2, increasing anticipation for the event that effectively replaces E3. As noticed by Rock Paper Shotgun, Geoff Keighley mentioned in a Twitch Q&A that the event will primarily focus on updates for games that have already been announced, but there are still some new announcements in store. Geoff aims to set fan expectations differently compared to his other event, The Game Awards, which usually features numerous world premieres.
One of the main titles fans took note of was Dragon’s Dogma 2, which came out in March of this year. With multiple scenes shown in the game, it seems promising that we may get some sort of DLC announcement for the game. A similar game was Helldivers 2, which recently went through some controversy, and may be looking to regain good faith from players.
Other games such as Phantom Blade 0, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, Death Stranding 2, Batman: Arkham Shadow, and more seem to be hinting at release date announcements. Some of these could plausibly fill out the rest of the release calendar for this year, adding some heavy hitters to the calendar. Unfortunately, Kingdom Hearts 4 will be missing from the event.
Overall, this year’s Summer Games Fest should live up to the hype of being E3’s successor. Hopefully, some extra time is allotted for developers to discuss titles, as previous events hosted by Geoff Keighley have experienced issues with this. Most notable were the last two Game Awards, where developers were given, on average, only 30 seconds to speak.
