Sunflower residents told to prepare to evacuate over Sand Stone Fire

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office asked residents in the Sunflower area to prepare to evacuate on Monday due to the growing Sand Stone Fire.

Just after 11 a.m. Monday, the Sheriff’s Office alerted residents that the area had been moved into “set” status and asked individuals to prepare to evacuate the area. The alert reminded residents to gather needed items like prescriptions, identification and important documents.

The Sand Stone Fire was discovered 14 miles northeast of Fountain Hills on July 28 and has burned 13,667 acres with 0% containment as of July 29. A total of 200 personnel were responding to the fire.

Highway 87 was closed southbound from mile marker 209 to 213, or from Sycamore Canyon to Dos S Ranch, while firefighters worked to prevent the spread of the fire.
