Targeting workers instead of convicted criminals for deportation means âgovernment has failed usâ
Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) said Sunday that targeting others besides convicted criminals for deportation means âgovernment has failed us.â
âYou know, if weâre going after the guy thatâs picking tomatoes or the nurse at the local hospital and weâre not going after the convicted criminal, then our government has failed us,â Gonzales told ABC Newsâs Martha Raddatz on âThis Week.â
President-elect Trump, a member of Gonzalesâs party, pushed a mass deportation plan throughout his bid for the presidency this year. He promoted a âDay 1 agendaâ mostly centered on border and immigration crackdowns. At a previous rally the president-elect said, âOn Day 1, I will launch the largest deportation program in American history.â
âYou know, our country was built on those fleeing persecution, and it would be, it would be just absolutely terrible if we donât protect those that are doing it the right way,â Gonzales said. âLegal immigration should never be mixed with these hardened criminals.â
Last week, in response to a question from journalist Cecilia Vega on CBSâs â60 Minutesâ about the possibility of going forward with âmass deportation without separating families,â Tom Homan, Trumpâs pick for âborder czarâ in his upcoming administration, said that possibility existed and that âfamilies can be deported together.â
Homan later said in an interview this month that âU.S. citizensâ and âlegal immigrants are perfectly safe, for Godâs sake.â
Trump has said that mass deportations will be aimed at people in the U.S. illegally, chiefly those with a criminal record.
âIf the message is, âWeâre here to deport your abuelita,â thatâs not gonna work well,â Gonzales said Sunday, using the Spanish word for grandmother.
