Teach Learn Grow set to return to Mid West, Gascoyne in November providing free tutoring

An organisation dedicated to providing tutoring is set to visit the Mid West and Gascoyne regions to help disadvantaged students.

Teach Learn Grow, based in Perth, has been working for more than a decade to help close the education gap.

Part of this includes its rural program, which will travel to six Mid West schools between November 16 and December 1 so volunteers can provide one-on-one mentoring.

More than 150 students are set to benefit from a combined 1122 hours of tutoring.

Teach Learn Grow chief executive Bridget Staude was thankful for the volunteers who go out to the regions to assist.

“TLG continues to thrive because of our incredible cohort of high-achieving tertiary volunteers. They are the backbone of our organisation and without whom we would not be able to make the lasting changes that we do,” she said.

“It’s incredible to hear the overwhelming positive responses from the staff and community members of the schools that we work with.

“We are continually requested back and currently have a waitlist of schools who would like the TLG rural program.”

Teach Learn Grow has visited Mid West areas in the past, including Geraldton, Mullewa, Mt Magnet and Meekatharra. It has also visited Carnarvon in the Gascoyne.

Carnarvon Community College former deputy principal Lisa Coon said she saw first-hand how much the program helped.

“The benefit of the intensive one-on-one tuition provided by the TLG tutors over that week cannot be over-stated,” she said.

“I witnessed so many of our students blossom and gain confidence over such a short period of time as they learned and attempted maths problems they previously had not been able to master.

“The tutors also understand that intensive learning can be incredibly taxing on children, so they also go to great lengths to build in to their sessions fun activities and games.”
