The 2 Needless Flaws in Bulwark Class Can be Solved With 2 Easy Fixes in Next Patch

It’s been nearly two weeks since Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 launched, and while the game has been met with widespread praise for its faithful adaptation of the beloved franchise, not everything is perfect in the grim darkness of the far future. As players have had time to delve deeper into the game’s mechanics and class balance, some issues have come to light—particularly with the Bulwark class.

The Bulwark, a melee-focused tank designed to hold the line against the xenos hordes, has been a popular choice for many players. However, as the honeymoon period has worn off, some glaring flaws have become apparent, leading to frustration among the Space Marine 2 community.

The Bulwark’s Achilles’ Heels

One player who’s been particularly vocal about the class’s shortcomings is Reddit user u/Korochun. In a comprehensive post on the Space Marine 2 subreddit, they outlined two main issues plaguing the class:

Bulwark: current problems, suggestions

The first issue highlighted by u/Korochun is the Bulwark’s underwhelming melee damage, especially when it comes to power weapons like the Power Sword. Despite supposedly having armor penetration, these weapons often struggle to deal with even basic shielded enemies, leading to frustrating encounters where a lowly Tyranid can parry an entire chain of attacks from a weapon that should be cutting through them like a hot knife through butter.

This sentiment was echoed by other players in the thread, with some pointing out the irony of the humble Chainsword outclassing the supposedly more advanced Power Sword. From a lore perspective, it certainly seems odd that a weapon with “Power” in its name would be less effective than its more mundane, albeit equally epic, counterpart.

The second issue raised by u/Korochun is the Bulwark’s limited team utility. While ostensibly the most team-focused class, in practice, its support abilities are tied to fairly long cooldowns and situational triggers, making them less reliable than those of other classes like the Tactical Marine.

This lack of consistent team support can make the Bulwark feel like a less valuable member of the squad, especially in higher difficulties where coordination and synergy are key.

Fixing the Frontline: Damage Buffs and Trait Tweaks

So, what can be done to address these issues? u/Korochun has a few suggestions, starting with a straightforward buff to power weapons’ damage and armor penetration.

They propose a 1-2 point damage increase across the board for all power weapon variants, as well as the ability to ignore shields entirely. They also suggest adding a 360-degree shockwave to the power whirl attack to give it some extra oomph. This would help the Bulwark live up to its fantasy of being a nigh-unstoppable melee juggernaut.

As for the limited team utility, u/Korochun suggests tweaking the class’s traits to offer more support options, such as restoring armor to teammates whenever the Bulwark restores their own armor, or providing minor team healing on Majoris kills.

These are all relatively simple changes that could be implemented in a patch, but they could make a world of difference for the class’s viability and fun factor.

Of course, balancing a game with multiple classes is always a delicate act. Buffing the Bulwark too much could risk invalidating other playstyles or making certain weapons obsolete. But if Saber Interactive can find the sweet spot, it could elevate Space Marine 2 from a great game to a truly exceptional one.

What do you think about the current state of the Bulwark class in Space Marine 2? Do you agree with u/Korochun’s assessment and suggestions, or do you have ideas of your own? Let us know in the comments below!
