The Fortnite Godzilla Crossover Cleverly Avoids a Mistake That Became a Major Issue With Doom During Marvel Season

Fortnite has once again managed to surprise players with its latest crossover event, bringing the King of Monsters to the battle royale in a way that learns from past experiences. Epic Games’ implementation of Godzilla shows they’ve been paying attention to player feedback, particularly regarding how powerful transformations are handled in-game.

For those who remember the controversial Doctor Doom transformation during Chapter 5 Season 4’s Marvel crossover, this new approach to becoming a titan feels like a breath of fresh air—addressing one of the community’s biggest frustrations.

A more balanced approach to power

When Fortnite introduced Doctor Doom during the Marvel season, players quickly discovered a frustrating catch—if you managed to acquire his powerful abilities but then got eliminated (skill issue, ahem!), that was it. Game over. No second chances, no dramatic comebacks, just a one-way ticket back to the lobby. It was a design choice that, while perhaps realistic, left many players feeling shortchanged.

Enter Godzilla, stomping into Chapter 6 Season 1 with a much more forgiving, albeit less “OP” approach. When players transform into the King of Monsters through one of the randomly spawning rifts (which have a 20% chance of appearing), getting defeated doesn’t spell the end of their match.

Unlike Doom, you don’t actually die if you die as Godzilla, since he’s not really designed to make it to the end of a game.

This change has been widely appreciated by the community, who see it as a sign that Epic Games is listening to player feedback:

However, some chaos-loving players do miss the high-stakes yet overpowered nature of the previous approach.

The new system creates a perfect balance between power fantasy and fair play. Players can still experience the thrill of being a towering kaiju, but without the crushing disappointment of having their entire match end because some opponents managed to gang up and take them down.

One aspect that both transformations share, however, is how they encourage something rarely seen in a battle royale—cooperation between opponents. Whether facing Doctor Doom or Godzilla, success often comes when players temporarily set aside their differences to tackle a common threat.

These moments of impromptu alliance create some of Fortnite’s most memorable experiences. Players who were just trying to eliminate each other seconds ago suddenly find themselves fighting side by side against a greater threat. Perhaps it’s these unexpected moments of cooperation that make the game special.

The key difference now is that these epic showdowns don’t come at the cost of someone’s entire match. When a Godzilla player is defeated, they simply revert to their normal form (unless they own the Godzilla skin itself, that is) and can continue playing. This creates a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved, whether they’re the ones wielding the power or working together to stop it.

The result is a more dynamic and enjoyable experience that maintains the excitement of powerful transformations while eliminating the frustration that came with previous implementations. It’s a sign that Epic Games is getting better at balancing fun and fairness.

What do you think about this new approach to powerful transformations in Fortnite? Do you prefer the high-stakes nature of the Doctor Doom era, or do you appreciate the more forgiving Godzilla implementation? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
