“The maps are so bad they got the whole lobby voting”

All the success and hype of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has been overshadowed by the game’s abysmal map pool. Released on October 25, 2024, the game has a lot of players and good critical reception, but the players haven’t hesitated to speak out. The multiplayer map pool is just not it.

From Reddit posts to in-game voting, players are airing their disappointment over the design and layout of the new maps. While Treyarch has implemented a variety of classic and new elements to refresh the franchise, many players have pointed out the flaws in the current map pool.

The Black Ops 6 Maps Are Not Getting ANY Love

Maps like Derelict and Lowtown have been called out for enabling repetitive and predictable gameplay. In particular, campers have taken over these maps. And you don’t have to be a CoD sweat to know that that’s no fun.

One Reddit user summarized it by saying the small, tight maps often lead to quick and unfair kills, forcing players to be on edge constantly. It’s the least of the game’s issues right now though.

The newly introduced Omni-movement mechanic has only contributed to the chaos. This new mechanic that was supposed to be a game changer is a game changer but in the wrong way.

Players are reporting that the speed and unpredictable movement patterns have made it nearly impossible to anticipate opponents’ actions. As one fan put it, players feel they’re forced into “mindless running around” as enemies can appear from any angle at any moment.

As a result, players are finding that traditional map knowledge offers less advantage than before, reducing the strategic depth that is often a part of Call of Duty‘s appeal. Players accustomed to more strategic play aren’t finding what they want from the current map pool.

The new Kill Order mode and returning fan favorites like Domination and Search and Destroy have brought some positive attention to Black Ops 6. But even in these modes, players have noted that map design prevents effective team coordination.

It’s Not New For Call of Duty, But It’s Certainly Bad

The map voting within Black Ops 6 lobbies easily settles the whole debate. On Reddit, players have shared how one-sided the voting currently is, with entire lobbies voting to avoid specific maps.

This isn’t a very common thing for the Call of Duty series, where maps usually only receive this much attention due to fan favorites or maps with notorious reputations.

Criticism of Black Ops 6’s map design has inevitably drawn comparisons to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), which also faced backlash for its map selection.

Many fans suggest that the Modern Warfare maps were similarly flawed, but believe that Black Ops 6 took these issues a step further. But as players adjusted to the style, they came to appreciate the complexity and tactical diversity those maps offered.

Whether Black Ops 6’s maps will ultimately find similar acceptance remains uncertain, though many players feel that Treyarch has gone too far from the formula that made earlier Black Ops maps iconic.
