The Veilguard Fans Beg for the Same Energy Sonic the Hedgehog Fans Had as They Protest for a Remodel of 1 Dreadful-Looking Character (and Rightly So)
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the latest entry in a beloved RPG series, however, not all fans are happy with a few design choices in the game. The game is set to release sometime this fall.
One major enemy type, the ogre, is getting a lot of negative attention. Fans are saying it looks much worse than before and rather cartoony. They want a redesign, like how Sonic the Hedgehog got one for its movie after massive fan backlash.
The Ogre’s Look in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
A Reddit user voiced their frustration, pointing out how the ogre’s new design looks far worse than its predecessors from over a decade ago. They were puzzled by the lack of discussion on the subreddit and urged fellow fans to demand a redesign, similar to the successful fan-led campaign that led to a redesign of Sonic for the movie.

The original ogres in Dragon Age: Origins were massive and terrifying, setting the standard for what a darkspawn should look like. Dragon Age: Inquisition continued this trend, making the ogres even scarier.
But The Veilguard has taken a different approach, resulting in a cartoony and less detailed design that has left fans disappointed. The ogres no longer evoke fear, instead, they look like they belong in a different type of game altogether.
The fans want dark and gritty fantasy, not this new style. Another fan said the ogre looks like it was designed by someone who only knew the word “ogre,” without understanding what makes darkspawn scary. They feel the new design is impossible to overstate just how bad it is.

Fans are not happy with other enemy designs, too. One user compared them to Kingdom Hearts enemies, which they hate. Another fan doesn’t like the overall art and aesthetics of the new game. Most of the fans wish the game stayed consistent with the aesthetic from Origins, which they thought was nailed perfectly, with its dark and gritty vibe.
The Series Lacks Consistent Art Direction
Criticism isn’t limited to the ogres and enemies alone. Fans have expressed their discontent with the overall art direction of The Veilguard. Many feel that the darkspawn and other characters have taken on a more animated appearance, losing the gritty and realistic feel that defined the earlier games.
The stark contrast between the dark, mature themes of the earlier games and the more cartoonish visuals of the latest installment is very obvious, for all the worst reasons. Fans who loved the aesthetic of Origins and Dragon Age II are particularly vocal about their disappointment.
They feel that the series nailed the dark fantasy look in the first game and wish the developers had stayed true to that style, and made some real dark fantasy stuff. Even though Inquisition managed to maintain a good balance, the latest one seems to go overboard.
The Veilguard has had a complex development history. Development began shortly after the release of Inquisition, but their main focus was still Mass Effect Andromeda, and then Anthem. Hence, there is a long wait of ten years for this sequel.
