It’s a known fact that Bethesda has been the titan of the gaming industry for decades. The studio is renowned for creating the Elder Scrolls series, several Fallout games, and the latest, Starfield. These RPGs have defined an entire generation of games and bring players immersive worlds filled with interesting characters and stories to unfold.

One of Bethesda’s lesser-known titles is undoubtedly Prey. The game was released back in 2017 and even received positive reviews but flew under the radar due to the notoriously confused marketing strategy. Despite its issues, Prey gathered a cult following, which prompted Bethesda to give the title two game-changing expansions. Bethesda never likes giving up on its games.

Bethesda’s major updates for Prey | Steam

Prey was, in many, a big-budget attempt by Arkane and Bethesda at recapturing the magic of System Shock 2. Players must use various biological modifications and technologies to dig deeper into the ruined space station. The game encourages players to play, explore, and sequence. Despite the game’s failure to capture a sizable player base, Bethesda released the massive Mooncrash and Typhon Hunter DLCs for the game in 2018.

While the main game was already a blast, Prey’s Mooncrash incorporated new ideas into its basic skeleton, resulting in one of the most unique first-person experiences of all time. On the other hand, Typhon Hunter was a new multiplayer mode, which was also available in virtual reality. Both updates were quite revolutionary at the time and allowed folks to explore Talos 1 space station in a new way.

Bethesda knew that the game wasn’t bound to reach the successes of their other titles, but still, they couldn’t treat its player base in an unfair manner. In an interview with The Guardian, Bethesda’s Peter Hines, while talking about the company’s passion for single-player titles, acknowledged Prey’s struggles but revealed that they still gave the game needed updates.

Single-player games are Bethesda’s main focus, and they’ve shown that they’ll continue to experiment in hopes of finding something that finally clicks like their other major games. Bethesda doesn’t drop its games just because they didn’t match some financial targets; they’ll continue supporting it at the end of its life cycle. Let’s hope they continue this trend with Skyrim after we finally get our hands on the highly-anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6.

Prey 2 isn’t happening | Steam

The heartbreaking news is that Microsoft has decided to close Bethesda-owned studios. Alongside Prey‘s developer Arkane Austin, mobile game maker Alpha Dogs, Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, and creators of the original Prey, Roundhouse Studios, also faced closure. While many developers will be reportedly integrated into other projects, the possibility of a Prey sequel remains unlikely.

However, there’s still some hope for Prey fans. Arkane Lyon didn’t get hammered down like its sister studio, which means that it might pick up the Prey IP sometime later. However, it’s gonna be a while before this ever comes to fruition as Arkane Lyon is currently working on Marvel’s Blade. For now, fans will have to deal with the rare gem of a game, Prey, alongside its expansions, such as Mooncrash and Typhoid Hunter.
