This Myrtle Beach area school is the best in SC, new state report says. See how other schools rank

Schools won’t send students’ semester report cards home for a couple of months, but report cards for South Carolina schools are here.

Every year the South Carolina Department of Education and the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee release report cards evaluating student performance and school quality in the Palmetto State, and the 2023-2024 academic year’s scores are in.

The report cards use indicators like academic achievement, graduation rate, student progress and college and career readiness to rate elementary, middle and high schools on a 100-point scale. The number of points a school gets determines if it scores an excellent, good, average, below average or unsatisfactory rating.

Of the 57 schools in Horry County, about 26% scored excellent ratings, 44% scored good ratings, 28% scored average ratings and 2% scored unsatisfactorily. No schools in the county scored a below average rating.

With 99 points out of 100, HCS Scholars Academy High School in Conway earned the distinction of the highest score in the state. The program, which students can apply to in eight grade, lets high school students work for a high school diploma and college credits simultaneously through Advanced Placement and dual-enrollment courses at Coastal Carolina University.

According to HCS Scholars Academy High School’s report card, the school was given excellent scores in the academic achievement, preparing for success, graduation rate, college and career readiness, high school student success and school climate categories.

Only one school, the elementary division of Academy of Hope Public Charter School, received an unsatisfactory report card. In the evaluation, the school got an unsatisfactory rating for student progress and a below average rating for academic achievement, though it did receive a good rating for school climate.

Individual school report cards can be viewed here, and report cards for all the schools in Horry County are available here.
