Three more Mega Drive / Genesis games have been added to Switch Online

Three more Sega Mega Drive / Genesis games have been added to Nintendo Switch Online.

The newest additions are ToeJam & Earl: Panic on Funkotron, Vectorman and Mercs.

ToeJam & Earl: Panic on Funkotron is the second game in the ToeJam & Earl series. Rather than a top-down, free-roaming, procedurally generated adventure like the first game, this is a side-scrolling 2D platformer.

In it, Earthlings have invaded ToeJam & Earl’s home planet, so they have to capture them by throwing jars at them.

Vectorman is a side-scrolling action game in which players control an Orbot, a cleaning robot tasked with killing all its fellow Orbots who have been reprogrammed to kill humans.

The game is notable for its use of ‘Vector Piece Animation’, in which the protagonist is made of 23 individual sprites which all move together, giving it more fluid movement.

Finally, Mercs is the sequel to Capcom game Commando (the games were known as Wolf of the Battlefield I and II in Japan). It’s an overhead run and gun game where you have to rescue a former US president from terrorists in Zutura, a fictional country based on South Africa.

The Mega Drive version of Mercs is actually two games in one – Arcade mode is a straight port of the Capcom coin-op, whereas Original mode is a completely new story with new stages and the ability to swap between five different characters.

The addition of these three games brings the total number of Mega Drive / Genesis games released on Switch Online to 47 in the west (plus the Japan-only Puyo Puyo).

To play Mega Drive / Genesis games on Switch Online, players need to subscribe to the Expansion Pack membership.

A standard Switch Online subscription, which costs £3.49/€3.99/$3.99 for a one-month membership and £17.99/€19.99/$19.99 for a 12-month membership, gives access to NES, SNES, Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.

Players who pay extra for the Switch Online Expansion Pack also get access to Mega Drive / Genesis, Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Advance libraries.
