Tigers secure ticket to men’s A-grade grand final by defeating the Kings

The Tigers have secured their ticket to the Broome Basketball Association’s wet season men’s A-grade grand final after handing the Kings their first defeat of the season.

But it was the Kings who dominated the early exchanges, clocking 18 points while the Tigers lagged behind with just half the points as the two teams went head to head in the qualifying final at the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre basketball courts on November 20.

The Tigers struck back in the second term, regaining ground on the scoreboard and keeping the Kings at bay to bring the score back into check, 21 to 24.

The Kings kept their unsteady lead throughout the third quarter with the Tigers constantly licking at their heels, 39 to 36.

In the final term, a three-pointer from the Tigers’ Lattrell Matthews evened the score to 39-39 before another score from Keagan Victor pushed the Tigers into the lead for the first time.

Two scores from the Kings’ Trevor Menmuir and Zaiazlyn Hart gave them a 44-41 lead, but it was followed by two big three-point shots from the Tigers’ Lattrell Matthews and Julian Cox within the last minute, handing the Tigers the win.

The Tigers’ Matthews was the top scorer with 25 points while Menmuir clocked the most points for the Kings on 14.

The Kings now go on to face the Gantheaume Pointers in the preliminary final after the Pointers successfully took down the Jets in a one-sided elimination final.

The Jets jumped to the lead in the first quarter with back-to-back three-pointers from Clinton Manado kicking off the match.

It wasn’t long until the Pointers had pulled ahead though, closing out the term with a 12-9 lead.

The Pointers continued adding to their lead throughout the second term while the Jets struggled to get up on the board until later in the term where Brennan Stack Jr scored twice in a row to bring the score back into check, 20 to 28.

The third quarter belonged to the Pointers, adding 16 points to their scoreline while the Jets added just nine points, 46 to 29.

The Pointers opened the final term with four scores in a row before producing another three scores in a row to secure their lead.

The Jets sank some impressive shots late into the final term but it was all too late with the Pointers’ commanding lead securing a 64-39 victory.

The Pointers’ Tom Schorer top-scored on 16 points while Brennan Stack Jr led the way for the Jets on 14 points.
