Todd Howard Confirms Starfield Almost Included a Major Fallout Crossover We Desperately Wanted to Happen

Todd Howard, a key figure at Bethesda, has confirmed there was a discussion about a crossover between Fallout and Starfield, which never materialized. The two titles fall under the banner of Bethesda, and there were rumours that a collaboration was on the cards.

Given Fallout’s big following, it might have been a smart idea to merge these two universes in some way. That said, we never got to see these two titles collaborate due to technological limitations.

Todd Howard Speaks on Potential Starfield and Fallout Crossover

The notion that both games could exist in the same universe or share some thematic elements certainly seems possible. Linking the futuristic space exploration of Starfield with the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout could not only lead to something new but also attract more players.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Director Todd Howard revealed that such a plan was indeed discussed internally. However, like many other possible ideas, it didn’t make it to the main game.

“Oh, we planned, and those plans went out the window,”

According to Howard, even though there were plans for it, implementing every idea is challenging because the technology isn’t advanced enough to execute so many plans simultaneously.

“We knew we were going to rewrite parts of the engine, so we started building technology for the planets and the outer space stuff on our previous engine and renderer.

However, this would take a long time to develop, so the idea was shelved. Regardless, it opens the door for future possibilities and with Creation Kit available in the game, modders might just do it.

Mods Are the Only Saving Grace for Starfield

Despite a long development phase and a sizable hype behind the game, it has failed to live up to the expectations. The initial response to the game was mostly mediocre, and the gameplay left many unimpressed.

Since then, Bethesda has tried to reignite the player base by adding the much-needed Creation Kit to the game. The feature allows players to create mods, which could be essential in changing the game’s narrative.

As one would expect, mods have already started to take over the game. There is a mod for just about everything, allowing players to alter every inner game mechanic. Given that mods have played such a big role in other Bethesda games’ success, it would be interesting to see how far it takes Starfield.

Would you have liked it if Bethesda had pushed harder for a crossover? Do you think modders will potentially take on the idea? Let us know in the comments below.
