Tornado touches down in Western New York as Beryl remnants hit

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down near Silver Creek just after noon Wednesday and moved along a northeast path near Eden and East Aurora as the remnant storms from Hurricane Beryl hit the region.

This story will be updated as more information about the tornado becomes available. More than 25,000 power outages were reported in Erie County at the height of the storms just after 1 p.m.

All of Western New York remains under a Tornado Watch until 9 p.m. Wednesday. A weather “watch” means the conditions exist to produce a severe threat, while a weather “warning” means the threat is imminent.

Severe thunderstorms are possible throughout the day along with strong wind gusts and heavy rain that could bring localized flooding. Much of WNY is on track to see 1-2 inches of rain Wednesday, according to the 4Warn Weather team, with some areas potentially reaching 3 inches.

The National Weather Service issued several updated Tornado Warnings on Wednesday.

The initial Tornado Warning was issued for parts of Chautauqua County and expired at 12:15 p.m. The second update issued for southern Erie County at 12:24 p.m. and grew to include central Erie County and portions of northwestern Wyoming County and southwestern Genesee County as the storm moved across the area.

Separate Tornado Warnings were issued Wednesday afternoon for southeastern Chautauqua County and western Cattaraugus County, including the city of Jamestown; and another warning over Allegany County and Potter County, Pa.

In the aftermath, the Town of Eden is under a State of Emergency due to storm damage.
