Triantis steals Boyle thunder as Hibs win in Scotland
Rising Australian Nectarios Triantis has stolen some of the thunder from his in-form Hibernian teammate Martin Boyle as the Edinburgh side continued their surge in the Scottish Premiership with a 2-0 home win over struggling Aberdeen.
The 21-year-old former Central Coast Mariner Triantis, who’s on loan at Hibs from English Championship side Sunderland, headed home in the first half of their victory on Saturday.
Nicky Cadden also scored with a header after the break as Hibs moved up to fifth in the table, just two points behind their ailing visitors whose freefall has now seen them go 14 league games without a win.
But Hibs are soaring, even if their rejuvenated Socceroos winger Boyle wasn’t at his recent best in front of goal.
Still, Boyle helped set up Triantis’s 24th-minute goal when his corner found Josh Campbell, whose header across the six-yard box found the midfielder powering in to convert with a diving header.
After Chris Cadden had crossed for twin brother Nicky to head in off the bar on the reumption after halftime, Boyle had a chance to seal the victory against his hometown club when Kieron Bowie played him through, but he was thwarted by Aberdeen keeper Ross Doohan.
Elsewhere, Hearts romped to a 6-0 win away to Dundee to make it six games unbeaten and to move within a point of the top six.
Two goals in as many minutes from Lawrence Shankland and Blair Spittal had Hearts in control at halftime and they turned the screw after the break with a brace from Elton Kabangu and further strikes from Musa Drammeh and Kenneth Vargas.
The win leaves Hearts just behind Motherwell in the table, having moved three points clear of Dundee.
Croatian Bozo Mikulic’s second-half strike gave bottom side St Johnstone a hard-fought 1-0 win over St Mirren to boost their chances of survival.
