In an interview, Fatma Al Shamsi, the first Emirati woman to hold a CIO position in a government entity, noted, “The CIO’s role today is about understanding the business needs and leveraging technology to meet those needs, creating value for the organization.”
In terms of specific details, the UAE has seen a significant investment in digital infrastructure, with over $300 million allocated for digital transformation initiatives in 2022 alone. This investment is aimed at enhancing the country’s digital capabilities, including cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. The impact of this investment is already being felt, with several government services now available online, and plans to increase this to over 90% of all services by the end of 2025.
“Our goal is to make the UAE one of the top five most digitally advanced countries in the world,” stated Omar Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications.

With more emphasis on creating digital value, UAE CIOs will be at the forefront of driving innovation and change within their organizations.
